War of the Ring Battle Report, Gondor vs Mordor.

Finally got some time to get in a game of War of the Ring (WOTR) by Games Workshop. This game would bring a newcomer Nate, playing the side of Gondor in his first mass battle game.

War of the Ring Game, Gondor vs Mordor

War of the Ring Game, Gondor vs Mordor

We went with 750 points and since Nate is new to the game, I kept magic out of it.  We can bring magic in later, army lists where as such, each line is a Formation so I listed siege engines and monsters on separate lines for clarity.

Gondor

Faramir

3 Companies Minas Tirith Warriors, with captain and Banner
3 Companies Minas Tirith Warriors, with captain
4 Companies Minas Tirith Knights, with shields, and captain
1 avenger bolt thrower
1 avenger bolt thrower
2 companies High elf archers (allies)

Mordor

Gothmog

4 Companies Morannon Orcs
4 Companies Mordor Orcs with 2 handed weapons, and captain
4 Companies Mordor Orcs with shields, captain, and banner
2 Companies Mordor Orcs with bows
1 Mordor Troll
1 Mordor Troll

I must apologize, I was using my camera phone and in the excitement of the game didn’t hold still on some shots so it got a little blurry.  On some of them if you click on them to enlarge them, it wasn’t so great, sorry :(

On the image up top it is from the Mordor side.  On the far left you can see the Orc Bowmen, followed by a Troll.  To the right of the troll is the Morannon Orc formation with Gothmog in it.  Followed by the Mordor Orcs with 2 handed weapons in column, next is the Mordor Orcs with Shields, finally the 2nd troll on the far right flank

For Gondor Ill go from left to right as well, so up top you can see a formation of Minas Tirith Warriors with a captain, then next is the Minas Tirith Knights, with a captain and Faramir.  The unpainted figs next to them are the High Elf archer allies.  and to the right of them is the 2nd formation of Minas Tirith Warriors.  Up on the hill to the right are both of the Avenger Bolt throwers with nice command of the field.

The blue dice are the might points, makes it easier for new players not to forget they have heroes on the board.

The first couple of turns were spent getting the armies in position to fight.  My Orc bowmen took up shelter in the woods on the orc left.  while the rest of the army tried to close with “at the doubles” because of the ranged firepower of this force.  The Mordor orcs with 2 handed weapons drug their feet and in the first shoot phase for Gondor the Mordor Troll on my right flank was dead with 2 large bolts through his torso and a hail of elven arrows all over his body.  My Mordor orcs on my far right managed to spread out just a bit, giving me more frontage on my formation.

Nate wasn’t too fancy, he moved up his Infantry and supported them with the knights in the middle, the elf bowmen stayed back doing what elven archers do best.

Gondor and Mordor Prepare to Clash!

Gondor and Mordor Prepare to Clash!

The Minas Tirith Warriors slammed into my troll and the Orc bowmen in the defensible terrain, that didn’t go so well for Gondor.  Half of the Orcs with 2 handed weapons were gone from arrows and siege engines slamming into them in the orc center.  The orcs on the far right were doing fine vs the Minas Tirith Warriors.

Faramir’s knights slammed into Gothmog’s Morannon Orcs in the middle, there was a flurry of might points spent, there were heroic duels fought, but neither Gothmog nor Faramir fell, but many of their troops did.  In the end the knights got crushed in one turn bringing the game back to even. (My apology on the lack of pictures per turn, we were having so much fun I forgot. :)  Ill make sure and get more on the next one.)

Faramir's Knights Destroyed in the Middle

Faramir's Knights Destroyed in the Middle

The Morannon orcs charged into the warriors to their left and with the help of the troll smashed men left and right.  The Elven archers and bolt throwers continued to decimate the orc ranks, destroying the orc formation with 2 handed weapons.  The Warriors of Minas Tirith on the far right continued to slug it out with the orcs, neither side giving any ground.

The orcs on the far right get in trouble (you’ll see in the picture below) as the Troll and Gothmog’s formation try to turn around and put pressure on the remaining Gondor troops.

Ouch!! Way to Many 5's and 6's for the Orc's Liking.

Ouch!! Way to Many 5's and 6's for the Orc's Liking.

A turn later, the Mordor orcs had about had it, Gothmog’s Morannons try and get their to help, now it is a race against time, and for my liking there was too many sharp objects hurling through the air ripping up my orcs.

Gothmog and the Troll Race Against Time

Gothmog and the Troll Race Against Time

Gothmog managed to slam into the Gondor formations flank, the Warriors of Minas Tirith had only a few men left and the Mordor orcs got destroyed.  The troll decided to start lumbering toward the elven archers, under a hail of arrows and siege engine missiles it did not work out well for the Mordor Troll and he went down quickly.  The yellow block next to the Warriors means they failed the courage test after the battle.

The final couple of turns turned into the orcs trying to close the ground with the shooters of Gondor’s alliance.  the Orc bowmen tried to shoot it out with the elves since getting there would be futile, but in a couple turns all the orcs were destroyed by elven arrows.  Gothmog needed one more turn to get in a charge against the elves but his formation fled the field with only him and a couple orcs left, the orcs just couldn’t contend with the hail of missiles.

The Gondor Survivors

The Gondor Survivors

Gondor won on turn 7, we had a great time, it was a great little 750 point battle.  One highlight I remember well was the Gondor players shooting.  With the bolt throwers, there was a total of 14 rolls of which only 2 times he rolled a miss, and when he did hit it was usually a 5 or 6 on the d6 roll.  Three of the siege engine hits were lucky strikes, so he crushed me via the air.  :)

It sounds like 4 of us will be getting together this weekend for 2 on 2 with 4 total armies, 500 point each.  Chad another newcomer with one game under his belt with be joining Nate and I along with Lance.  Lance and I have played about 5 games against each other to date and really enjoy it.  It should make for a fun Saturday, and Ill try and get some pictures.

I think we will have a Rohan, Mordor, Isengard, and Gondor army on the table (500 points each)

thanks for checking out the report, please leave a comment or two or a link to any reports you have.
